Our Story

The Beginning

Our love of grape growing and wine making began in 2007 when we planted our first home vineyard. We named the vineyard “Pauma Vista Vineyard” because it is located off Pauma Vista Drive in Valley Center and the initials “P V” are also our initials (Pete and Vicki). We made “home-made” wine from those grapes for ten years. We took classes in wine making and joined a group of fellow home winemakers.

Pete grew up in the Central Valley of California and harvested peaches and almonds as a kid to make a little extra spending money. He moved down to Escondido while in high school but never lost his interest in agriculture. After he and Vicki were married, they bought a house in Valley Center on three acres of land with mature avocado and citrus trees. For twenty years they worked the grove and sold the fruit locally. Eventually, in an effort to save water, they cut down the trees and planted grape vines.

Pete retired in 2011 after a very rewarding 40-year career as a fire fighter/ fire chief for the Escondido Fire Department. After retiring, he had more time to devote to the vineyard and began taking classes on all aspects of grape growing.

She received a bachelor’s degree in Biology from UC Davis and spent the next 30 years as a high school biology teacher and counselor. She retired in 2013 and enrolled in the UC Davis wine maker certification courses, completing her wine maker certification in Dec. 2016. Vicki enjoys both the science and the art of wine making. She uses winemaking techniques that showcase each varietal’s unique characteristics.

“Pete and Vicki are both very knowledgeable and kind! I love their Petite Syrah! …”
