Vicki and Pete Montgomery’s love of grape growing and wine making began in 2007 when they planted a home vineyard. They named the vineyard “Pauma Vista Vineyard” in part because of its location off of Pauma Vista Drive in Valley Center and because the initials “PV” are also their initials (Pete and Vicki). For 10 years they produced “home-made” wine for family and friends.
During those early wine-making years, Vicki’s mastery of the craft was rewarded with:
Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals at the San Diego County Fair from 2013-2018
2018 Best in Show San Diego County Fair for the 2016 Tempranillo Blend
In 2018, they purchased a 7-acre plot and planted in less than one year. They are currently concentrating on farming Spanish and Rhone varietals including Petite Sirah, Tempranillo, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Albarino grapes.
The vineyard sits above Pauma Valley at an elevation of just under 2,000 feet. Summers are characterized by very warm days and cool nights due to the coastal breezes coming up from the San Luis Rey River Valley. With consistent temperatures and a longer fall harvesting season, our grapes have ripe fruit flavors and less acidity. Perfect conditions for creating wines that possess fuller body and flavors.
Winemaker Vicki Montgomery
Vicki is from Monterey where at a young age she developed a strong interest in science. She received a degree in Biology from UC Davis (where she met Pete). She and Pete moved to Escondido and Vicki spent 30 years as a high school biology teacher and counselor. After retirement, she enrolled in the UC Davis Extension Viticulture classes, completing her wine maker certification in 2016. Vicki enjoys both the science and the art of wine making and uses techniques that showcase each varietal’s unique characteristics.
Vineyard Manager Pete Montgomery
Pete comes from the Central Valley of California where he harvested peaches and almonds as a kid to earn a little spending money. As a teenager, his family moved to Escondido but he never lost his interest in agriculture.
After a very rewarding 40-year career as a fire fighter/fire chief for the Escondido Fire Department, Pete retired. He then turned his full attention towards the vineyard and completed instruction on all aspects of grape farming. Pete is a strong believer in the idea that good wine begins in the vineyard.
